This Sourdough Avocado Toast is a healthy option for breakfast or brunch. Made with homemade sourdough bread, creamy avocado, and customized with your favorite toppings.

Does it get any more classic brunch than avocado toast?
If you’re a sourdough baker like me, you have to try it on toasted homemade sourdough. It’s simple, satisfying, and so good.
All you need is one ripe avocado mashed with a pinch of sea salt and a little lemon juice. Spread it over two slices of toasted sourdough bread, and that’s your base.
From there, it’s all about how you want to top it!
Keep it simple with everything bagel seasoning or red pepper flakes. Or get a little fancy with smoked salmon and capers, or a fried egg and crispy bacon.
It’s easy to scale up, too. If you’ve got friends coming over for brunch, it makes a fun little DIY avocado toast bar.
I hope you give it a try and love it as much as I do!

Ingredients & Substitutions
Here are some notes on key ingredients. For a full list of ingredients, check out the recipe card below.
- Sourdough Bread- I used my simple sourdough loaf, but feel free to use any sourdough variety you like - multigrain, whole wheat, everything bagel, or even sourdough olive bread.
- Avocado- Use ripe avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure. If yours are underripe, let them sit on the counter for a day or two until ready.
- Lemon Juice- Just a little helps brighten the flavor and slows down browning. You can swap it for lime juice or apple cider vinegar if that’s what you have on hand.
- Sea Salt- I like using flaky sea salt or kosher salt to bring out the avocado’s natural flavor. Adjust to taste.
- Toppings of Choice- Keep it simple with red pepper flakes, or dress it up with anything from sliced tomatoes and soft-boiled eggs to microgreens and smoked salmon. Check out the "Topping Ideas" section below for more inspiration!
Tips for Success
- Choose ripe avocados. They should give slightly when gently pressed.
- Use homemade sourdough. These toasts taste best on freshly baked sourdough.
- Prepare just before serving. Mash the avocado right before assembling to keep it from browning.
- Play with textures and flavors. Add crunchy, creamy, or spicy toppings to make each bite more interesting.

Make Ahead Tip
This is one of those recipes that’s best enjoyed fresh, but you can prep the avocado about a day in advance.
Mash it with salt and a splash of lemon juice, then press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to help prevent browning. Store in the fridge for up to one day.
