    What is pizza seasoning?

Pizza seasoning is a flavorful mix of herbs, spices, and salt that gives bold flavor to everything from pizza to pasta and tomato sauce. It usually has oregano, basil, garlic, red pepper flakes, and a few other seasonings - perfect for adding a little extra kick to your favorite dishes.

I first tried this seasoning when testing my sourdough pizza bread recipe. And it was so good that I started mixing it into my sourdough discard pizza dough and sourdough whole wheat pizza dough, too!

It’s also great for seasoning roasted veggies, stirring into pasta sauce, or even sprinkling on popcorn. And the best part? It takes just 5 minutes to make with basic pantry staples. So quick and easy!

Trust me, once you have a jar of this on hand, you'll be finding new ways to use it all the time. I hope you give it a try and enjoy it as much as I do!

    Ingredients & Substitutions

Here are some notes on key ingredients. For a full list of ingredients, check out the recipe card below.

    • Oregano- A must-have for pizza seasoning, dried oregano adds a bold, earthy flavor.
    • Basil- With its peppery kick, dried basil is a classic in pizza seasoning. If you’re out of dried basil, dried parsley works as a substitute.
    • Garlic Powder- Adds a strong, garlicky flavor that pairs perfectly with the other herbs.
    • Onion Powder- A little onion powder brings a touch of sweetness that balances the bold, savory flavors. You can swap it with onion flakes if preferred.
    • Rosemary- A pinch of dried rosemary adds a piney flavor that complements the other herbs. If you don’t have it, dried thyme makes a great substitute.
    • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes- Adds a bit of heat to the seasoning. If you prefer a milder version, you can reduce the amount or omit it altogether.
    • Kosher Salt- I use Diamond Crystal Kosher Salt, which measures about 2.8 grams per teaspoon. If you're using table salt or Morton's brand, be sure to measure by weight or use about half the amount. You can also omit the salt for a salt-free pizza seasoning.

How to Use Homemade Pizza Seasoning

Here are a few ideas for how to use this versatile seasoning blend:

    • Pizza- Sprinkle it on top of homemade pizza. Try pairing it with my sourdough discard pizza dough, whole wheat pizza dough, grilled pizza, pan pizza, focaccia pizza, or sourdough pizza bread.
    • Tomato Sauce- Stir it into your favorite marinara sauce to serve with sourdough pasta.
    • Roasted Vegetables- Toss veggies like zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, or potatoes with olive oil and a sprinkle of pizza seasoning before roasting.
    • Popcorn- Shake some on freshly popped popcorn.
    • Salad Dressing- Mix it with olive oil and vinegar for a quick, herby vinaigrette.
    • Breadsticks or Garlic Bread- Sprinkle it over sourdough breadsticks or garlic bread before baking.
