Ingredients & Substitutions
Here are some notes on the key ingredients. For the full list of ingredients, check out the recipe card below.
- Sourdough Bread- Whether homemade or from your local bakery, sourdough's flavor and chewiness are perfect for making garlic bread.
- Unsalted Butter- Softening the butter makes mixing and spreading easier.
- Olive Oil- A little olive oil makes the garlic butter more spreadable and adds flavor.
- Garlic- Mixing fresh garlic and garlic powder gives this sourdough garlic bread a bold garlic flavor. Finely mince the garlic so it cooks through in the oven. If you don't have fresh garlic, you can use garlic paste or minced garlic from a jar.
- Seasonings- A blend of garlic powder, salt, dried parsley, and oregano is perfect for garlic bread. Feel free to customize the seasonings based on what you have in your pantry.
🌱 Sustainability Tip: If you don't bake sourdough bread, buy it from a local bakery or farmers' market. Supporting local businesses helps the community and the environment.
Variations
- Cheesy- Add shredded mozzarella, cheddar, or Parmesan on top of the garlic butter before baking.
- Fresh Herbs- Mix fresh herbs like parsley, basil, thyme, oregano, or rosemary into the garlic butter.
- Pesto- Stir some homemade pesto into the garlic butter mixture.
- Spicy- Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the garlic butter for a spicy kick.
How to Make Sourdough Garlic Bread
Here is how to make homemade garlic bread with sourdough.
Step 1: Preheat oven. Preheat your oven to 425℉. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
Step 2: Prepare bread. Using a sharp serrated knife, carefully cut the sourdough loaf in half lengthwise. Place the two halves, cut-side up, on the prepared baking sheet. If necessary, remove the ear so the top half of the bread sits flat.
Step 3: Make garlic butter. In a small mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, extra virgin olive oil, finely minced garlic, dried parsley, dried oregano, garlic powder, and kosher salt. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
Step 4: Spread garlic butter. Evenly spread the garlic butter mixture over the cut sides of the sourdough halves.
Step 5: Bake garlic bread. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges of the bread are turning golden brown. For an extra golden top, broil on high for an additional 2 minutes, if desired.
Step 6: Cool and serve. Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Cut into 12 slices and serve.
Tips for Success
- Use fresh sourdough bread. The best sourdough garlic bread starts with a fresh loaf. Ideally, bake your own with a homemade sourdough starter. If you don't bake sourdough bread, pick up a fresh loaf from a local bakery.
- Soften the butter. Ensure your butter is at room temperature for easy mixing and spreading.
- Adjust garlic to taste. Add more garlic for a strong flavor, or use less for a milder taste.
- Keep an eye on the bread. Keep an eye on the bread as it bakes to prevent burning. Since oven temperatures can vary, look for golden brown edges to know when it's done.
- Serve immediately. Sourdough garlic bread is best served fresh and hot from the oven.
What to Serve With Sourdough Garlic Bread
Sourdough garlic bread pairs well with almost any meal.
For a classic combo, serve it with pasta dishes like lasagna bolognese, meatballs, roasted garlic alfredo sauce with sourdough pasta, and blackened salmon pasta.
Pair it with soup and salad for a light lunch or dinner. Try it with Caesar salad, spinach caprese salad, strawberry goat cheese salad, chicken noodle soup, broccoli soup, or pumpkin soup.
You can also enjoy garlic bread as an appetizer or snack with dips and sauces like marinara, pesto, alfredo, or hummus.
How to Store
Store leftover sourdough garlic bread in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Have you ever tried incorporating most of these ingredients into the bread dough and baking it? I just wonder how it will turn out. I’m getting ready to make another loaf, I may experiment with your ingredients.

I haven't, but I bet it would be delicious!! I've added roasted garlic to sourdough bread, but I bet adding butter, herbs, and garlic powder along with fresh garlic would make an amazing loaf. I'd love to hear how this turns out when you try it! 🙂
